Aging population posing a problem in LaSalle
Following in the footsteps of the rest of Quebec and Montreal, LaSalle's population is aging. In fact, since 2001, the percentage of seniors has exceeded the number of younger residents and the number of seniors is increasing quicker here than elsewhere.
There are currently 73,457 residents in LaSalle; 4% of the total Montreal population. Contrary to other cities and boroughs where the population is expected to increase by 3.6% by 2011, it should only be around 0.3% in LaSalle.

A sharp increase is expected among residents 65 years and older, while those 15 years and younger are sharply decreasing. One of the biggest differences between LaSalle and the rest of Quebec and Montreal is that there doesn't seem to be an increase in adults between the ages of 15-64.

In effect, it appears that Quebec's aging population may prove to be a bigger problem for LaSalle than for the rest of Montreal and the province. The consequences of a rapidly aging population are well known. In a few years' time, a much smaller part of the population will have to work to support an ever increasing number of seniors.

This phenomenon will certainly be felt in all sectors, whether it's education, employment or health. Studies are already underway to better prepare the government on how to respond to increased health care needs.

"Our population is aging and there will be less young people and more seniors. We will absolutely have to adapt our services to better respond to the needs. We know that seniors are now living longer and need m ore care," explains Colette Parent, assistant director of two senior homes serving Dorval, Lachine and LaSalle.
Education
In comparison to Montreal and Quebec residents, a much larger percentage of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 do not attend school. In 2001, 35% of young people did not attend school and close to one person out of three over the age of 20 had not completed their secondary education. The percentage of juvenile delinquency is also higher in LaSalle.
Cultures
The LaSalle population is much more English-speaking and has a few less immigrants than the average. During the 2001 census, 41% of LaSalle residents stated English as their mother tongue and 57% claimed French. On the island of Montreal, the distribution is 66% francophone and 32% anglophone.
