LaSalle comes to the rescue of Congo war orphans
The LUMIERE POUR TOUS association, supported by the LaSalle borough, is mobilizing to help the children in the Democratic Republic of Congo who have been left orphans by war.
The armed conflicts and the war that Congo has been experiencing over the past 13 years have left almost 4 million people dead and produced almost 20,000 orphans, who have now been abandoned and left to fend for themselves.
The Congo is recently a post-electoral shift towards more stability, but is suffering from severe cases of illness and poverty.
In need of help
These children, most of them between 5 and 6 years old, became orphans because of the war and are now living in garages and storage rooms, begging on the streets, trying to survive. They are exposed to tuberculosis, malaria, typhoid fever, AIDS, and many more illnesses. The association believes it is our moral duty as human beings to help these children and give them a chance.
"Our mission isn't an easy one and will require a lot of energy," stated Aimé Samba Shutsa, a French teacher, originally from the Republic of Congo and president of Lumière pour Tous. "We want to obtain financing, donations, sponsors," she adds.
For the moment, the association is collecting funds, clothes, toys, school furniture and they expect to be shipping them off by the end of October to children who are currently sleeping on the street. These are children who truly need your help!
