While vacationing in Maine, Giovanni Di Legge saves two lives
LaSalle's Station 13 now has its very own hero ! Around 4 p.m. on Friday, August 24, while vacationing with his family in Maine, 40-year-old police officer Giovanni Di Legge didn't hesitate for a second to jump into the frigid waters at Wells Beach, endangering his own life, to save the lives of a young 12-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman who were caught in a powerful riptide.
Risking his life to save another
Giovanni and his family were enjoying a beautiful outing, not far from Ogunquit, when "we heard cries for help ! I was about 40 metres away and I started shouting out to the lifeguards, who hadn't heard anything. I jumped in and then I heard the cries of two more women, one of them a 12-year-old girl. I went to the aid of the young girl, I grabbed her and then swam towards the direction of the lifeguards and gave them the girl."
The situation was more perilous for the 31-year-old woman, who was about to drown. "She had no more strength when I reached her. She didn't even react. I started swimming with one arm. I was stuck in the current and it has extremely difficult. I started thinking about my two-year-old daughter and feared leaving her fatherless. I can't explain it, but I somehow found the strength, like a shot of adrenaline, and I started swimming harder. I made it to shore, but it took everything I had. She was unconscious, but she was breathing."

Reached by The Gazette, 31-year-old Kristen McCarthy, a nursing student from Marlborough, Massachusetts, stated: "I came up and saw a beautiful blue sky, but knew if I got pulled down again, I was dead. I was exhausted at that point."
An incredibly emotional journey
Just a little while after being saved, all three victims were walking and feeling fine. "The woman hugged me and thanked me for saving her life. It was the nicest gift I could have ever received. This was the first time that I saved someone directly. I just crashed in a chair. I was completely spent. Two American police officers came to congratulate me. The woman's boyfriend hugged me like I was a member of his family."
Giovanni has experienced an array of emotions. "I could have drowned, but I'm sure my police training helped me. We're used to staring danger in the face, in order to help people. It's part of my own life philosophy, I've always had a protective nature and a heightened sense of justice."
Well-deserved honours
Our hero was the object of a surprise birthday party at LaSalle Catholic High School. "When I showed up, there were over 1,000 students in the gym. My commander, my lieutenant, and my colleagues were there. They gave me a trophy and an applause that gave me goose bumps."
Loyal to LaSalle
Giovanni lived in LaSalle for more than 30 years and has excelled in football and soccer. After attending LaSalle Catholic and Comprehensive High School, he pursued a career in football at Champlain College, and then went on to join the Concordia Stingers, where he completed a degree in Urban Studies. He did an internship at the urban services department for the City of LaSalle.

Giovanni no longer resides in LaSalle, but still has two sisters here. He tried out for the Canadian Football League and was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Giovanni spends a lot of time discussing prevention with teenagers, merchants, seniors and others. "My main job is to help out young people and try to explain to them the consequences of bad decisions. It's a very gratifying job and I love it."
