Echoes from Borough Council
Former councilor Oksana Kaluzny demanded that the city should publish the amount of taxes paid by taxpayers each year to Montreal since the merger, versus the amounts returned by Montreal to the Borough. "In all honesty, you should tell LaSalle residents that you made a mistake and that you are sorry for having deceived them by embarking in this merger with Montreal. Montreal collects taxes without providing them with an adequate budget and this is proven by the fact that you need to impose local taxes. We should have a committee of citizens who can decide where we could make cuts."
Mayor Manon Barbe replied: "That’s misinformation. We promised that the fees would be based on services and that services would not be reduced despite the merger. What we want is that the surplus from the former City of LaSalle is used to serve the residents. This money won’t be touched to pay for groceries, but on large projects with the federal and provincial levels. If we invest a dollar, we can look for two additional dollars. LaSalle is one of the boroughs that spends the most money on street repairs and sidewalks, because we can obtain more funding with the tripartite programmes."
