One day in prison for murder conspiracy, extortion, kidnapping and abduction
The young Mexican Edwin Scarlott Mata Lima, 18 years old, was sentenced, but only for having tried to obtain a prohibited weapon. He planned to abduct, rob and even kill the LaSalle couple who won the $27 million jackpot in the Lotto 6/49. Detained since last June, the youth was sentenced to one day in jail before being released and probably deported to Mexico, as he had no legal status in Canada.
He planned to abduct and even kill the couple but police officers were able to foil the conspiracy. Thanks to public information received by the police, a conspiracy was in the works to steal a portion of the new millionaires’ winnings.
The young couple in their forties and their three-year old daughter were asked to leave their home while the police managed to complete the investigation and arrested the suspect.
The young man never took action because his roommate had reported him to the police. He allegedly planned to use an escape vehicle and to set fire to their house before leaving, the Crown’s attorney, Me Anne-Andrée Charrette told Judge Robert Marchi.
It appears that the young man had obtained a bullet-proof vest and was shopping for a firearm. Informed of his plans, the police used a double agent to approach him and sell him some pistols. But the police have never been able to prove that there was somebody else involved in the plot with the young Mexican. In Canada, there can be no accusation of conspiracy when there is only one conspirator. The Crown withdrew its accusations and the youth pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to possess a prohibited weapon.
