Echoes from Borough Council
Answers to questions
Mayor Manon Barbe answered the questions raised by ex-councillor Oksana Kaluzny concerning the sums paid by LaSalle to the City of Montreal and the amounts received by LaSalle for 2008.
For 2008, residential buildings generated taxes of $47,972,700.00 while non-residential ones generated $35,317,500.00. Institutional buildings generated $3,396,500.00 and transfer taxes were $2,715,700.00 – all for a total of $89,402,400.00.
This amount was sent to the City of Montreal; in return LaSalle received a budget of $45,382,000.00, representing 50.8% of the amount. The portion retained by Montreal will be spent for the following services: municipal evaluation, water management, public security, fire protection, municipal court, social housing, assistance to the homeless, elimination of waste matter, public transport, water purification, management of road networks, promotion of the economy, industrial parks and many others. Mrs. Barbe believes that LaSalle receives its right share.“Ville Marie Borough’s return on investment is 11.37% and St. Laurent 29.9%. With LaSalle’s 50.8%, that makes us the fifth borough with the highest rate of return.”
Christmas decorations
Oksana Kaluzny did not understand why several Christmas decorations were put up along LaSalle Boulevard even if numerous bulbs were defective.“That’s like playing with toys”, she said.
Pedestrian path
The Council asked the Quebec Transport Ministry for a pedestrian path to cross over to the 138 road in the extension of Centrale Street.
Condolences
The Council expressed its condolences to the family of Gilles Pelletier who died recently. He was the sergeant at police station 13 of LaSalle from January 1997 until his retirement in April 2005.
