Hockey fans will be gathering at the Jacques-Lemaire arena and at the Dollard-Saint-Laurent sports centre from January 7th to 20th 2008 for the 29th edition of the LaSalle Bantam hockey tournament, under the honorary presidency of Gaston Therrien, sports analyst with the Sports Network.
48 teams in competition
President of the tournament for the 15th consecutive year, Michel Brabant confirmed that 48 teams will be playing: 18 in the AA category and 30 in the BB category. The first matches will take place on Monday, January 7 beginning at 17h00. The official opening ceremony is planned for Friday, January 11 at 20:30, with the Lanaudière West Pioneers playing against the Cobras of Verdun-LaSalle. The two finals will be played at the Jacques-Lemaire arena on Champlain Boulevard on Sunday, January 20: the BB finals at 15h00 and the AA finals at 17h00.
Gaston Therrien, honorary president
This 29th tournament will be presided over by honorary president Gaston Therrien. As a player, he spent three seasons with the Remparts of Quebec. After one season in Switzerland, Therrien represented the Nordiques de Québec from 1980 to 1982. He then played for 11 seasons in Switzerland and France. Returning to Quebec in 1993, he trained the Élites de la Rive-Nord for the AA Midget in 1993-1994, before managing the AAA Midgets of Charles-Lemoyne College during the 94-95 season.
Therrien graduated from the Junior majors and spent two seasons behind the bench with the Océanic de Rimouski, two seasons with the Foreurs de Val d'Or and two others with the Rocket de Montreal.
