A new generation of neighborhood police officers
Police force launches its new look
It was in LaSalle police station 13 last Tuesday that the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) launched the new plan for SPVM service coverage. It also unveiled its new corporate identity. This was in line with the SPVM’s offer to renew its service so that is better adapted to local realities and to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

The new service coverage plan was implemented on November 11. The SPVM paired up 12 area stations to reinforce existing stations. More autonomous, the 33 neighborhood stations are better equipped to solve the problems of their sectors. In a few months, each neighborhood station will have its Action Module per project – a team of four police officers who will concentrate on solving local problems. Station 13 in LaSalle Boulevard already had its Action Module since November.

Among the other changes expected, a new welcome structure will take effect next February. It will provide access to new drafting services for reporting of incidents. This structure will enable residents to complete an incident report either by telephone, seven days out of seven; for major incidents, they can go to a service counter in a mobile unit which will be sent on the spot. And in 2009, a new Internet portal will make it possible for people to fill a report directly on the Internet.
New corporate identity
The SPVM will ensure that the public receives a public security service that is more visible in the heart of Montreal society. This is why it came up with an identity which would represent this new generation; it brings together the large SPVM family composed of civilians, police officers, cadets, school crossing guards, parking agents, taxi inspectors or towing agents. This is a team of more than 6,000 people (4,500 police officers and 1,500 office employees).

The new logo is the result of a group competition consisting of citizens and police officers. It takes what was in use since January 1st, 1972 and it was given a modern twist. The figure illustrates a human silhouette and a star. The latter represents excellence and authority, while the human silhouette shows that the person is the main focus of the SPVM’s work. The modifications will be done gradually and as equipment becomes obsolete. The complete transition should take three years before new police uniforms are introduced and five years before new police cars to hit the road.
