Crime rate in 2007 went down in LaSalle
Commander Pierre Rousseau and his team of police officers in LaSalle’s station 13 are doing all they can to prevent street gangs and other kinds of crime. Statistics for 2007 confirm that there is a decrease in the area’s crime rate.
Police records show there was a 19% decrease in sexual assaults, a 15% decrease in business theft, a 17% decrease in car theft and a 30% decrease in breaks-ins in offices and homes. For Commander Rousseau, “the work of our police officers who were recruited for this task is to be commended; they’re doing a great job. We don’t have a high rate of job rotation and this enables our officers to familiarise themselves with the area, know their subjects well and sometimes have the capability to get involved before a crime is committed. I also commend the work of our partners – the Borough, Vélo Secur and youth and service organisations and services.”
Problem of street gangs
Regarding the problem of street gangs, Commander Pierre Rousseau doesn’t mince his words. “No one is going to take control of LaSalle’s parks and streets. We will never tolerate people who aim to control a specific area. We’re not saying that nothing can happen but LaSalle will not be a comfort zone for street gangs. We do whatever it takes to agitate them, we collect a lot of evidence and we arrest them.”
The year 2007 began with two murders within a period of three months. After that everything was quiet. “We watched them closely from all angles and we sent them a clear message: we know who you are and we’re watching you. A major street gang member was arrested and that de-stabilised the groups. The nerve center of activity lies in the gathering of information. All relevant information must be provided. Police officers treat this information in strict confidence. The residents are our eyes and ears. Do not hesitate to call us. Info Crime line at 514-393-1133, if you ever notice any suspicious activity.”

Station 13 focuses on prevention. “We are very much visible in schools and in parks. Our socio-community agents are in schools almost every day. In the park, we have patrol officers on bike and we also have junior officers. We have partnerships with organisations that are involved with the youth.”
Priorities for 2008
Because life can’t be 100% perfect, the year 2007 was marked by a 11% increase in accidents with material damages and a 3% increase in accidents with injuries. “We are going to intensify our monitoring activities in those areas as well so people should act in a disciplined manner and respect speed limits”, said Commander Rousseau.

Station 13 on LaSalle Boulevard has 77 employees.
