Meals on Wheels 35th Anniversary

Meals on Wheels was launched on February 6, 1973, and since that day, 111,900 meals have been cooked and delivered to physically disabled citizens of LaSalle. This is a service operated twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Who needs Meals on Wheels ? First of all, the elderly and those with case histories and unfortunate conditions in which too many people live. Some never go out. Clients' disabilities include cancer, blindness, amputations, fractures, muscular & nervous disorders, and many are undernourished. Our group requires 80 dedicated volunteers a month to run smoothly. All meals are cooked and delivered from St. John Brebeuf Parish. Thanks to Fr. John Walsh and our spiritual adviser Deacon Bill Graham.

The Volunteer Bureau of Montreal acts as a coordinator between the volunteers and those who refer the clients, public nurses, hospitals, parish and CLSC. We work without a government grant. The only way this is possible is with the support from our local organizations, LaSalle Lions Club, LaSalle Canadian Legion 212, Knights of Columbus 284, Borough of LaSalle and the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal.

The students of Allion Elementary School, 6th Grade French Immersion classes have been generous with their time assisting the drivers in helping deliver the meals. A big thank you to the teachers, secretary, and principal. Meals on Wheels assists the community of LaSalle without any discrimination of creed, color, language or religion.
