Armed suspect arrested at Cavelier-de-LaSalle @E:Thanks to vigilance of police officer @R:The vigilance of a police officer from LaSalle’s station 13 led to the arrest of an armed 19-year old who went to Cavelier-de-LaSalle high school on Tuesday, February 12 at 12h45. The man is accused of possessing a prohibited weapon and crack (freebase cocaine). The police officer responsible for the arrest has been a social community police officer for several years and is assigned to station 13. She patrols the high school regularly for at least 16 hours a week. His presence has helped to establish relationships with the students, to calm the collective temper and to solve conflicts before they escalate. After learning that his young brother was involved in a noon time fight in the school yard, the accused went to the school with the intention to speak to those who were allegedly involved; the situation, however, had already been resolved. Earlier in the day, the police officer noticed the strange behaviour of a young student who was standing near the school’s back door. When she came out with other young students to have a smoke, the police officer kept an eye on the area and noticed the suspect, a former student of Cavelier who is well known to police officers. The suspect arrived in the school yard and a young girl came to join him. The officer asked the suspect to leave the premises but he went inside the school anyway, disobeying the officer’s request. Without hesitating, the police officer called for back-up and a patrol car arrived on the scene immediately. The officers went after the suspect and managed to control him on the second floor. A search outside the school led to the discovery of the prohibited weapon that the suspect was carrying.
