Turn off your car engine
Useless idling of vehicles prohibited
Now that winter’s here, the Borough is reminding all residents and workers about the importance of turning off their engines while their vehicles are not running. This small gesture will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases. It will also contribute towards improving the quality of air in LaSalle – a policy that was adopted in January 2006 to reduce the harmful effects caused by idling vehicles. Mayor Manon Barbe reminds everyone “that while not letting their engines idle five minutes per day, Montrealers and municipal employees contribute to the decrease in the release of almost 67,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Thus, each one does his part in the plan to reduce the greenhouse effect simply by turning off their engines when the cars are parked.” The regulation on noise caused by idling engines of vehicles has been in force in the City of Montreal as been in force since mid-February. The regulation does not apply when the outside temperature is lower than - 10 °C and that the engine is turned on to activate the heater when there are passengers in the car, just as in the case for refrigerated vehicles, emergency vehicles, taxis (from November 1st to March 31st), armour trucks and hybrid vehicles.
