René Duranceau, 93 years old and still working !
A phenomenal child of nature, René Duranceau is really 93 years old. In perfect health, the man still drives his car, doesn’t need glasses and lives life to the fullest. When he turned 65 and after a 38-year career with the Standard Brands plant, he got a new job in the City of LaSalle as a guard/monitor at the Dollard-St-Laurent sports centre, a position he has held for the last 28 years.
Work keeps him happy
René Duranceau has been working at the Dollard-St-Laurent sports centre in the corner of Airlie and 75th Avenue. He puts in five days a week, from 9h to 17h, from the end of August to the end of May. He works as a monitor; he collects payments from those who rent the skating rink and stands at the door checking entry tickets for paid shows.
“My desire is to work until 100. I was married for 48 years and my wife died in 1986. I have neither wife nor child. Working here keeps me alive. I’ve been getting up at 6h00 and itching to get here. I love people. On Saturdays and Sundays, I don’t know what to do with myself.”

How does he explain his longevity ? The man pointed towards the sky and thanked “the man at the top. He runs my life. I go to church every Saturday. I don’t do any physical exercise. I go to bed at 8:00 PM. I don’t eat fish, chicken turkey, veal or lamb. I like beef and pork. I cook my meals, do my laundry, my ironing, etc.”
A humble story about a great man
René Duranceau has always lived in LaSalle. He was born here in 1914 and has been a resident all his life. He lives on 50 Stirling Street in a house built in 1902 for which his father, Joseph Duranceau paid $1,200.00. “The house is 106 years old. My father worked at Canadian Pacific and was earning 10 cents an hour. He was nearing his 94th birthday when he died. My mother, Charlotte Meloche, died in 1971 at the age of 88 years old. They died within three months of each other. I have a younger brother who’s still alive. I had a sister who is now dead and a brother who was born before me but did not get to know him because he died when he was only three years old.”
In 1943, 1944 and 1945, René Duranceau also worked as a police officer in LaSalle. “There was only LaSalle Street and we patrolled the area at night. I was making 50 cents an hour. I worked at Standard Brands during the day and was a police officer in the evenings until 23h00.” From 1942 to 1979, he was employed as a machine operator at Standard Brands of LaSalle, a company that manufactured coffee and baking powder. At age 65, he retired and everyone thought it was a much-deserved retirement.

But René Duranceau bucked the trend. “I went to the old City Hall on Strathyre Street to pay my taxes and applied as a guard/monitor. They hired me and I’m still here 28 years later''
A gift from above
Mr. René Duranceau got a call from Air Canada offering him two tickets for a trip to any Canadian city of his choice. He had always dreamt of taking a plane ride which he was never able to do. He chose Vancouver and will fly there next summer.
