Earth Hour 2008
Public is invited to participate on March 29 from 20h to 21h
Through a resolution presented by Mayor Manon Barbe, LaSalle Borough confirmed its participation in Earth Hour 2008 on Saturday, March 29 from 20h to 21h. The Council is inviting Borough residents to be actively involved.
International event Earth Hour 2008 was inaugurated in 2007 in Sydney, Australia and sponsored by the World Wildlife Foundation. This event was created to make world populations aware of the importance of a commitment to conserve energy in the planet’s battle against climactic changes. One simple gesture like turning off lights for an hour is the event’s objective.
Except for emergency lights, the Borough is planning, among others, to turn off the lights of municipal buildings for an hour.
This initiative generated a 10% reduction in electricity usage in 2007 and a decrease of 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of about 50,000 vehicles taken off roads for one hour. In 2008, cities around the globe will take part in this event - Chicago, Copenhagen, Sydney, Ottawa and Toronto.
