Double medals for twins Ziga-Kearney
At the FINA world master championships in Perth, Australia
Twenty-four year old twins Emily and Aileen Ziga-Kearney of LaSalle will have fond memories of their participation at the FINA X11th World Master championships in Perth, Australia, which was held from the 19th to the 25th of April. They belong to the Canadian team for synchronised swimming and they won the gold as a duo and the silver as a team.
The Master World Championships bring together 5,000 athletes from all over the world. The twins have been living in LaSalle for five years now. “We joined these championships in the hope that we would step up to the podium twice – for the two competitions in which we participated and that’s exactly what happened. The competition was tight but we won the gold as a duo and the silver as a team.”
Impressive record
In the past, the young athletes from LaSalle had won several honours worth mentioning:
* Canadian champions with the Senior team in 2003.
* Gold medalists as a team during the 2003 Canada Games.
* Canadian champions with the Junior team from 1998 to 2002.
* Bronze medalists as a duo at the COMEN International Cup in Greece, 1998.
Emily and Aileen Ziga-Kearney completed their university degrees in Actuarial Science at the University of Quebec in Montreal and they now work as actuarial analysts for major international companies.“We have always combined sports, studies and work for several years now. We have been joining competitions in both the national and international levels for more than 10 years. When major championships are about to be held, the team undergoes training sessions in the evenings and weekends for a total of 15-20 hours a week.”
For the LaSalle twins, the 2008 competition season has now ended. With respect to international competitions, the following are scheduled:
* US Masters Open Championships in Las Vegas (Nevada), October 2008.
* World Masters Games, in Sydney, Australia, from the 10th to the 18th of October 2009.
