Monique Jérôme-Forget takes on dual role
Aside from being Treasury Board president, she takes on Finance
When Jean Charest introduced his new cabinet, Marguerite-Bourgeoys MNA, Monique Jérôme-Forget, found herself with additional duties. Forget, who already had the position of Treasury Board president, will now also be the Minister of Finance, as well as in charge of government administration and Minister of governmental services.
Forget will play a pivotal role in the new Quebec government, as Premier Charest gave her a clear mandate this past Wednesday. "In a few weeks, you will present a new budget and you will present a number of tax cuts, particularly for the middle class. You will ensure that every dollar of Quebec's money is well managed. You will pursue the development of less costly and simpler government services for citizens with the implementation of Services Quebec and online government services."
Forget is proud of the confidence the Premier has in her. "By giving me these responsibilities, Mr. Charest has put in place a much more flexible structure that allows us to respond much quicker to Quebecers' needs."
50-50 cabinet
For Forget, this is a historical day in Quebec's history. "It's a great moment for women because they now comprise half of the ministers in the new government formed by the Quebec Liberal party. It's also one of the smallest cabinets since the Quiet Revolution, counting only 18 ministers."
According to the Marguerite-Bourgeoys MNA, Quebecers have the most gender equal government in history, as well as the first female visible minority.
"I’d like to tell the citizens in my riding that their new government will prioritize their quality of life. We will be the government for all Quebecers who work hard, who have children to raise and aging parents to take care of and need a government that represents them. Like Mr. Charest said on Wednesday, "the change that Quebecers asked for starts right now."
Impressive career
During the March 26 elections, Forget received her third consecutive mandate with a total of 16,752 votes, with a majority of 11,205 votes over her ADQ opponent.
With a Ph.D. in psychology, Forget has also studied political science at the universities of London and John Hopkins and heads a number of prestigious institutes and boards. She was also the vice-rector of finance, institutional research and human resources at Concordia University.
